4Grandma’s Sugar Cookies
Here’s a recipe for my grandma’s sugar cookies. I think they are the best, even though I might be a little bit biased! ;) Fairly recently, I used royal icing to decorate them. I don’t know why it took me so long to do that. They taste awesome, and look really cute as well! In the photo above are some cookies I made for my sister, because she is now a 1st grade teacher! On the royal icing post, I also posted so tips on how to make sure your cookies look nice and neat — although I think the biggest thing is just being patient.
Recipe from: Grandma Gish (thanks for letting me share your recipe!)
Makes about 5 dozen 2″ cookies
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
Note: if sifting the dry ingredients add 1/8 cup more flour
Method:
- Mix sugar and butter together.
- Add the egg and flavorings, and mix thoroughly
- In a separate bowl, stir together the dry ingredients.
- Slowly blend the flour into the egg and sugar mixture.
- Refrigerate for 2-3 hours.
- Heat oven to 375°F.
- Divide dough in half and roll 3/16th thick on a lightly floured board.
- Cut the dough with cookie cutters.
- Place on lightly greased baking sheet, or a baking sheet covered with parchment paper.
- Bake 7-8 minutes or until delicately golden
*A little tip on cookie cutters — think outside the box.
For the apple cookies I used a circle cutter. To make it look more like an apple, I used a knife to cut the dough & change the shape a little bit. For the stems, I just cut a little rectangle of dough and pressed it into the top.
The pencil cookies are actually made from a cross cookie cutter. I just cut two of the sides off and pointed one edge. Be creative!
Below are some cookies I made for the finale episode of ABC’s “The Bachelorette”. I brought them to a friend’s house — it made a fun & silly addition to our night!
If it says Grandma on it then it has to be good
